Gaeta wins the Blue Flag 2021! The official status arrives today after the rumors of recent days. This morning, the videoconference ceremony organized by FEE (Foundation for Environmental Education) took place. The prestigious banner, a symbol of water quality, environmental protection, efficiency of services, will fly for the eighth consecutive year on the beaches of Gaeta and in the city!
“The environmental quality of the city – declares the Mayor Cosmo Mitrano – of its waters and the territory, is again attested by the awarding of the Blue Flag 2021. As an Administration, in recent years, we have promoted those policies aimed at protecting the environment, eco-sustainability and the enhancement of natural and landscape beauties. The programming was followed by concrete actions including the promotion of initiatives, conferences, seminars and environmental education projects aimed, in particular, at the students and young people of the city. The protection of the marine environment, then, is one of the priorities that we set ourselves immediately because we are aware that it represents one of the most important resources of our city. We therefore encouraged every action that was aimed, above all, at the safeguarding and protection of our sea, at the care and attention of our beautiful beaches and at raising the values of urban decor by enhancing separate waste collection and making Gaeta an increasingly virtuous city. An important certificate – concludes Mitrano – which above all rewards the commitment of our citizens for a cleaner and more beautiful Gaeta “.
The Blue Flag is in fact an international recognition, established in 1987 “European Year of the Environment”, which is awarded every year in 49 countries, initially only in Europe, more recently also outside Europe, with the support and participation of the two agencies of the ‘UN: UNEP (United Nations Environment Program) and UNWTO (World Tourism Organization) with which the FEE has signed a Global Partnership Protocol and recognized by UNESCO as a world leader in environmental education and education to sustainable development. The checks are carried out by the local bodies of the FEE which, through a National Jury Committee, proposes the nation’s candidacies to the International FEE.
