This day tries to create awareness about the dangers associated with the consumption of tobacco.
Smoking is injurious to health and causes cancer. Other than cancer, there are various health elements that can be at a rise due to smoking. Heart and lung diseases, stroke, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis can all be caused due to smoking.
Smoking kills 7 million people every year ( COVID19 killed about 1 million in one year). WHO launched a global campaign to celebrate the World No Tobacco Day 2021, which will be conducted under the slogan “Commit to Quit”. The goal of the campaign is to help 100 million people quit tobacco use through various initiatives and digital tools. This can help to create healthier conditions that promote tobacco cessation year that we celebrate the 31 of may.

Let’s think reasons that could make us stop smoking:
Save the Earth: yes, because smoking a cigarette is like smoking a bit of our planet!
Abolition of child labor in the tobacco field: at least 60% of children are employed in the work of tobacco plantations, we need to stop this.
Second hand smoke: a devasting impact on health of infants and children including more frequent and severe asthma attacks, respiratory infections, ear infections, and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Some of the health conditions caused by secondhand smoke in adults include coronary heart disease, stroke, and lung cancer.
Predisposition to the most severe forms of COVID19: cigarette smoking predisposes to the most severe forms of COVID19 and heavy smokers are more likely to be hospitalized. Smoking increases the risk of developing diseases that are dangerous in case of contagion with the new coronavirus: diabetes, coronary heart diseases, high blood pressure and respiratory problems.
Another problem is the feeling of acceptation in peer group: boys and girls who smoke often feel more accepted by the peer group. Maybe they don’t like it, but they feel like they have to smoke. Girls often start smoking because of the distorted image of female emancipation.
At the end, but not less important, we need to think about the budget that we loose from our wallet: smokers consumes a pack of cigarettes every day, this is like to spend 150€ per month in smoke, which in a year become 1800 euros.
Don’t you prefer to use the same money for an annual top gym membership, take a spa&wellness holiday, buy an electric car or a small plot of land to make vegetable garden or renovate your house? Let’s think about it…!
